Displacing Your Rage

Well, Wafers, What's New?!

I've been listening to Neil Young's "Harvest" album, 1972. God, those were such different years. How many Americans today are miners for a heart of gold? 20? Instead, we have hearts of bitterness. But instead of Americans turning their rage against the real enemy, which they can't really identify, they attack Jews, Muslims, elderly Asian women, anyone whom they regard as different. They map their hatred onto innocent people. Bill Maher recently said on his show that "we've become shittier"--verbatim quote, my friends. "Depraved" would have been more accurate. We are a sick society, getting sicker every day. Trump in the White House will be the capstone of our collapse, and it's less than a year away.

Beautiful album! Young put out an unreleased album from those days recently called "Chrome Dreams"

It's incredible how organic his music is, it obviously comes from a state of flow....

Thanks for the ref. There are by now a # of bks discussing American loneliness. Americans are being punished for their way of life, but as I've said b4, the punishment is 'wasted' because they don't understand that they've done anything wrong. Examples:

    -Ignore Carter, and embrace Reagan
-Ignore Kennan, and embrace Paul Nitze
    -Ignore Mumford, and embrace 'growth'

It's actually a long list (see WAF for more details).

Toynbee said that civilizations didn't go under from outside attacks; rather, they committed suicide. But I don't think he conceived of a collapse based on self-destruction, stupidity, and buffoonery. The crucial problem, today:
-Self-destructive people don't realize that they are self-destructive
-Stupid people don't realize they are stupid
-Buffoons don't realize that they are buffoons

Moving in the direction of health is thus extremely unlikely.

History is calling on Trumpi in to finish the job. The positive aspect: an end to this stupid war in the Ukraine, and against Russia; detente with Putin; withdrawal from NATO. The negative aspect: on the domestic front, in the name of making America great, he will actually be killing us off. Who cd have imagined that the agent of America's endgame wd be a putz, a bulvan, and a schmegegge?

There are two references to his book The Re-Enchantment of the World featured in a book titled The Call of The Reed Warbler published in Australia. One reference calls it a Powerful Book and describes its message as unabashedly inspiring.
The other features a paragraph introducing the theme of chapter 12 which has the title Dancing Under the Moon

There's also an argument that the Gulf states are making a soft empire in the Middle East/North Africa region. This guy puts a good analysis for it (he does come from a specific position, but that does not invalidate many of his analyses)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCM2l10Wseg

This same guy stated in another video that it is the nature of things that all empires decline. And it is up to the empire to make the decline graceful or ugly. It seems to me that the US decline will be the ugliest there is. The very schismogenetic nature of the US (borrowing from anthropologist Gregory Bateson) and its addiction to the maxima (rather than the optima) means that the only way for the US to go is more division, and every attempt at a solution will only bring more division.

  24. I just had to alert Wafers to the following important and refreshing development. In his post this morning on The Duran podcast, commentator Alexander Christoforou asked a rhetorical, “Why doesn’t Nikki Haley drop out” after losing the South Carolina primary, and gives, as one of a number of possible reasons, that she is a “buffoon”, and that maybe she should just “buffoon away”. The buffoon designation is around the 22:00 mark:

    https://theduran.locals.com/post/5312476/nasty-surprises-asymmetric-war-nikki-loses-meloni-elensky-no-5-annalena-sanctions-dont-work

Also in the same podcast, Christoforou interprets Victoria Nuland’s extensive recent interview with CNN’s “very important foreign correspondent” (his sarcasm), which demonstrates the lack of a reverse gear of Schmidendom in regard to Project Ukraine. Isn’t the definition of stupid when somebody keeps doing something that fails repeatedly, but expects a different result?

When a civilization is in collapse, it lurches from one disaster to the next, both at the foreign and domestic levels. What it never does, is step back, and re-assess what it is doing. Which in turn serves to accelerate its decline. Buffoonage precedes carnage, wh/leads to more buffoonage, in a faster and faster vicious circle. In cybernetics, this is known as a system in runaway.

Thomas Piketty wrote perhaps the most widely read economics book of the 21st century: "Capital In the 21st Century." It is worth reading in full, though here is a nice summary:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOZJBKZqw40

The inequality between "capital" and "income" as Piketty categorizes it in the book, has increased to pretty much what it was during "The Gilded Age" of the Robber Barons, and threatens to get even more extreme. The phenomenon of our age seems to be "psychopathic populist strongmen autocrats", with this inequality as perhaps a main causal factor: Putin, ErdoÄŸan, Trump, Modi, Xi, Netanyahu, Bolsonaro, the former Hugo Chavez (who even fooled Chomsky for a time), etc.

I've been trying to get a better sense of Modi, however. He is the one person on the list I'm not quite sure of. My smart friends in India think very highly of him. But there is a sinister side to him, particularly with regard to things like the "Ram Mandir" and his muscular "Hindutva," (The RSS youth clubs, his inaction during the Gujerat massacre, etc.) which often leads him to be silent during outrages to the 250 million Muslims in his country. But he is a formidable figure. I'll give him that. He has done some good things. You can't lead a billion plus people and not be formidable. But he worries me. This book is an excellent history of modern India and captures pretty well the main problems with Modi: (Hopefully this isn't too off topic. But I thought it might interest some here.)

No need to thank me for the review of Crisis. I can't tell you how much your writing helps me stay sane in an otherwise crazy land. I listen to the radio almost every Sunday to catch Harry Shearer's Le Show. A quote from the most recent show went something like this: "Don't let the failures of the past cloud your vision of the failures of the future". I thought that sounded rather Waferish. Harry also publishes his broadcasts in the form of podcasts.

Thanks for yr informative discussion, as usual. Piketty is certainly rt abt the economic causal factor, but the historic imperialism over the 3rd World has a strong racial component as well, which is fueling a massive 'tectonic' shift that is playing out in our time. Karma, many wd call it. But pls note that yr over the half-pg limit; you need to be cognizant of that in the future. Thank you.

    Mike-

Glad my work is of benefit to you. The larger, over-arching perspective/drama is that the world is in the midst of a huge 'tectonic' shift (see my reply to Megan), and this explains a lot of what is going on. A "new world order" was put into place after WW2, wh/included the Cold War (e.g., the formation of NATO, wh/George Kennan warned against), and wh/envisioned Anglo (esp. US) control of the planet, both economically and militarily (when deemed 'necessary'). The result has been practically endless war, both cold and hot. (Kissinger once remarked that if you set yrself up as a hegemon, everyone else is going to try to knock you down.) The challenge to this biased, unfair world order (wh/eventually included Israel as an American 'outpost' in the Middle East) has now reached fever pitch, and we are seeing the effects of it, and on the microlevel as well. (Disintegration of the American Dream, for example, includes white Americans displacing their rage onto the 'Other', as well as road rage, nationwide 'short fuses', and so on. I discuss some of these effects in the Crisis bk.)

And yr ref to simple Americans is rt on target. There is no way 99% of the American public cd understand all this. Plainly put, they are dumb. They are not trained to think historically or sociologically. Rather, they are trained to think jingoistically, in Manichaean formulas. I doubt there has ever been a more gullible, narcissistic, and frankly stupid people on the face of the earth. But History, and the tectonic shift, will play out regardless, and one might even argue that this stupidity is actually a factor in this process. Which is why I frequently say, Onward & Downward! (See also my reply to Fly, along w/the structural approach of the World Systems Analysis School.)

  34. Finally, some Americans are realizing America is going down the drain. I say some:https://medium.com/an-injustice/why-the-trumpian-grotesquery-is-happening-now-to-america-93e9aa7516fc.: Trump, then, is a symbol, not just a man. Indeed, as a man, he’s plainly a monster. But that’s largely overlooked because of the relevance of Trump’s symbolic content to the United States, and to the American-led global monoculture. After all, consumerism turns us all into petty narcissists. He’s the epitome of capitalistic greed, the quintessence of consumerist myopia. We can pretend we’re drawn to higher principles, but our actions speak louder than our words, and consumer society is well-represented by Trumpism. I am writing my memoir which I describe my experience in America. Some of my friends in the US read it and told me it was too negative and full of hate. Instead, of realizing it America is negative and full of hate, they projected it on me. I am insane, not America. When I got hired at Sony, I got one of the most cringe inducing emails of all time.

    “Welcome to the Sony Family”

I’m not blind. I know how the game works, but the degree to which corporate America uses the word “family” makes my skin crawl.

Anyway. I spent all of last year working myself ragged to get the stupid fucking Spider-Man 2 game done. It’s sold 10 million copies so far. Wildly profitable.

My ‘family’ at Sony just shitcanned a bunch of us anyway.

Make no mistake. Trump is a buffoon. But he’s here as a historical actor to help bring the whole shithouse down in flames. I’m voting for him because I want this system to experience maximum chaos. I hope the average American is reduced to eating cans of Sterno and drinking his own urine for survival.

Yeah, 'family' my ass. What total hooey. And yes, Trumpi falls into Hegel's category of the World Historical Individual. His historical role is to bring down the curtain on the American experiment, and it seems to me that that is definitely in the cards. But as I've said before, Toynbee never imagined that buffoonage cd be a crucial factor in civilizational collapse.

The shaky basis of the attempts to maintain global hegemony by the U.S.-led West with its commitment to an bezzle economy based on quick gains and the attempted financialization of everything has been laid bare in Will Schryver’s most recent essay. Schryver argues that the larger lesson of the impending defeat of the U.S. and its NATO allies in Ukraine by the Russians is that an economy based on production of tangible goods and social commitments is triumphing over deindustrialized countries incapable of sustaining a war of attrition, and indeed, providing a tolerable level of social welfare for their populations. He declares the West’s dream of breaking up and looting Russia to be shattered as the American coalition will be forced into a decisive strategic defeat.

It is funny how much work it takes to actually have an "informed" opinion about much of anything. Take Mearsheimer's stance on Ukraine, for example. It actually requires that you read and understand a good bit of history, for it to make any sense. I totally see why someone would have a visceral reaction to Putin's invasion, and simply oppose him as a "genocidal monster." Gary Kasparov, for one, has a strong anti-Putin book, "Winter is Coming," which, while you are reading it, it is hard not to be sympathetic. You actually have to take an intellectual step back to realize why following Kasparav's advice, might well lead to a nuclear war.

But everyone I know, especially my "Trumpy" friends and acquaintances, are all so annoyingly cocksure in their poorly informed viewpoints. On the "Plandemic" the "stolen election" and so forth. Their rabid distrust of "expert consensus" especially galls me. When I was 33 I had read a great deal by normal standards, and had opinions about many issues: the economy, the Iraq War, and so forth. By my current lights at 53 most of what I believed then was pure nonsense. (Dr. Berman and John Gray woke me from my dogmatic, Neoliberal slumbers. I'm deeply grateful.) But how much one has to read and study to even have a clue that one hasn't a clue! I spend most of my waking moments reading and thinking, and in a sense it doesn't matter. No one around me reads or has any interest in what I do, so it is just a solitary pursuit of knowledge for its own sake. Anyhow, for some light listening, when it all just seems too much, this guy has a cute sense of humor in taking down the bumpkin Trump cult. (Needless to say, I don't endorse all of his views.)

More than 30,000 Palestinians have been murdered, mostly women and children. The IDF won't let more than a trickle of aid into Gaza, and when a food convoy arrives, they shoot the people desperately trying to get to it. Schmiden couldn't care less abt this genocide (weapons for wh/came from the US, and he wants to send more); but he has of late woken up to the fact that backing Israel seems to have cost him a lot of potential voters, esp. among younger Americans. That's all that matters to him--clearly, a great humanitarian. Meanwhile, the US refuses to endorse a cease-fire at the UN; smart! Gary was a “stringer” with some Gannett/AFJ affiliations, let’s leave it at that. So Gary filled me in on some of the details of Hedges’ loss of esteem.

In sum, a senior official at the Veterans Administration decided that the photo “V-J Day in Times Square,” which depicts a US Navy sailor embracing and kissing a woman he encounters on the street on 14 August 1945, is inappropriate as it shows a non-consensual act. Therefore, this bureaucrat sends out a memo stating that this photo should be removed from all VA facilities throughout the system.

    https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4496878-trump-leading-biden-seven-swing-states-survey/

Trumpola apparently has a narrow lead in the swing states, at least rt now, and they are the states that will determine the winner. Trump's felony trials, between now and Nov., throw things into question, of course; but then, the (corrupt) Supreme Court is doing what it can to get him elected. Overall, it's too close to call; there are too many variable factors.

As for the economic hardship you point to: it's happening slowly but steadily, and as long as it's slowly, we have the situation of a frog in gradually boiling water. My own crystal ball, however, tells me that eventually, it will hit a crunch, along the lines of 2008 or even worse, and then all hell will break loose. But this is only speculation on my part.

The Times article mentioned a 2012 petition that went nowhere to the White House asking for a peaceful state secession. (Peaceful? Ha! Wafers suspect that history does not come free.) The UK’s Daily Mail in a recent “Goodbye America” discussed the same poll and showed Washington wasn’t alone in secessionist sentiment.

Meanwhile, a new issue of Lapham’s Quarterly, “Power Outage,” points to a larger malaise surrounding this latest secessionist breeze. Editor Lewis Lapham cites thinkers William Ophuls and Lewis Mumford to make the case that America is dwindling into entropy – defined as chaos, randomness, and disorder – a meaningless tautological mess where “What is moral is what makes a profit; what makes a profit is moral.” Ophuls projects the imperial dreams of the globalist elite spawned by America too costly to maintain and bureaucratically so complex as to guarantee failure, explaining why the center may no longer hold.

Everyone is excited abt Schmiden's speech, pro or con. Here are a few observations.

-There will be no US demand for a ceasefire in Gaza. In fact, the military is supplying Israel w/weapons on the QT. The IDF will also invade Rafah; Schmiden will do 0 abt it. And then there's this:

    https://edition.cnn.com/2024/03/08/middleeast/gaza-israelis-aid-trucks-protests/index.html

-Trumpi was over the top when he told Putin he shd feel free to invade nonpaying NATO countries. But the larger context is that he envisions a different world order than the one in place since 1945, and wh/Schmiden seeks to preserve. In this new order, NATO wd be abandoned by the US, and Trumpi wd cultivate detente w/Putin, not Cold War opposition to him. In short, Schmiden is a warmonger, while Trumpi wants to free America of the 'world policeman' role.
-The major part of Schmiden's pitch is that he stands for democracy, while Trumpi stands for autocracy. The reality is that this is a nonstarter for the American public. They just don't care abt it, and it won't garner Schmiden any votes.
-All the facts and figures Schmiden can bring forth to show how Americans are better off economically--wh/may be statistically true--also make no difference, because most Americans are not experiencing any immediate benefit from all these programs, or events. And this is what they care abt.
-Did Schmiden's aggressive style turn the tide in his favor? The Dems think so, and apparently many GOPs are a bit worried. But Nov. is 8 mos. away, and the new Schmiden 'glow' may not last. Keep in mind that millions buy into Trumpi's narrative abt persecution and witch hunt.

    https://www.reuters.com/world/us/prepping-disaster-diversifies-more-americans-lose-trust-2024-03-09/

Apparently 20 million Americans now are "preparing" for not only natural but also political disaster by buying weapons in addition for first aid kits.

"Attendees and those running the booths said the show reflected the concerns of millions of Americans who no longer feel that they can always count on the government or private industry to provide the basics, like electricity, water and food. They cited the pandemic disruption of supply chains, the 2021 power grid crisis in Texas that left millions without power, and the recent outages for thousands of AT&T mobile users."

But then he started talking about the fiasco in Ukraine, and it turns out he's totally on board with what Genocide Joe is pushing in Ukraine! He realizes that the MSM is lying all over the place about Gaza, but cannot bring himself to realize that they're lying about almost everything, especially Ukraine. He got almost verbally abusive with me because I told him I didn't go along with that accepted narrative. And I pushed back with some facts he didn't know anything about. He claims that Putin never wanted to sign a peace agreement, but I told him that an agreement was just about in place between Russia and Ukraine in April 2022, and that that was when the US sent Boris Johnson to Kiev and basically ordered Zelensky to back out of it. Of course he (my acquaintance) knew nothing of this. I knew he wouldn't because he reads the Times. The MSM has never reported on it. This guy has a serious case of Trump derangement syndrome, just about the worst case I've ever seen, which I think is why he's fundamentally just fine with our proxy war in Ukraine.

I've been thinking a bit about Covid lately, Dr. Berman and Company. What did it expose about America?

We might never know the true global mortality rate, but the best information we have is that over 1 million Americans died from it, with the entire world suffering a total of 6 million deaths.

America is 5% of the world's population, but accounted for almost 17% of the world's Covid fatalities. As much as I detest America and its 'culture', there's something about this that just stabs my soul.

My heart feels like it's breaking even as I type this; there are tears in my eyes. The 'death instinct' isn't a philosophical abstraction in America's case. It can be interpreted literally.

Sorry for the downer post, but America is such a brutal place.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Gam-

Abt 15 yrs ago, an American journalist wrote that "the death instinct hovers over the United States." Perhaps he meant it metaphorically, but I think that by now it is, as you suggest, literally true. Imo, on both the micro and the macro levels, the country is committing suicide. If Trumpi wins in Nov., the process will be speeded up. But either way, we are doing ourselves in, and there is simply no way to reverse this downward trajectory. As I've said in the past, it wd be like trying to reverse an aircraft carrier in a bathtub. One sad aspect of this is that very few Americans understand what is happening. They are not trained to think historically or sociologically, so all they can do is lash out; which we see happening on a daily basis. Morris Berman and company: what books would you recommend on the history of Palestine and Israel? I really enjoy your writing style, Dr. Berman, I remember reading Twilight of American Culture and then Dark Ages America.

You are my favorite author on sociocultural issues.

Malaysia calls for the abolition of the veto. The primary reason is the American abuse of the power. In fact out of 82 Times the US has used the veto, 46 were used to help Israel with something. The point however is that 2030 is near. 30 years ago I doubt that any nation would be critical of the US, now everyone is distancing himself from. The whole World seems to recognise that it's over, except for the US, they still think they're number 1 (what else would you expect from toddlers playing politics).

One way to understand the current situation of the US in the world is simply to recognize that it is a fraudulent pile of shit. As time goes on, this recognition will probably increase on a worldwide basis. I'm just hoping that in all of this reportage, the word 'buffoon' will finally make an appearance.

And speaking of our collapse, I urge Wafers to check out an essay by Christopher Caldwell in the NYT for March 9th. Hard to believe the NYT wd run it. It's a review of a hot-selling French bk by Emmanuel Todd, the English title of wh/wd be "The Defeat of the West." I used a bk by Todd of 2002 in DAA, I believe, but this is even a darker picture than then. Todd writes that millions now believe that the Ukraine gig is an attempt by the US to beat back a challenge to its hegemony. He believes that American imperialism has endangered the rest of the world, and corroded the American character. Also that the US no longer has the means to deliver on its foreign policy promises, and that educational 'progress' in the US has actually brought abt educational decline. He believes our values are extremely negative; that we don't value the lives of our young. He claims that we are unable to distinguish facts from wishes, and so continue to screw up. The real threat to the Western order, he says, is the hubris of those who run it. And rt now, America is too unstable and disunified to be able to commit to anything at all, the Ukraine included.

Caldwell cites a 1985 bk by Loren Baritz, "Backfire" (wh/I read back in the day), abt Vietnam. The question Baritz was asking was what went wrong in Vietnam. His answer: "*We* are what went wrong in Vietnam."

This is the crux of it: *we* are an error, on almost any level you can think of. While Baritz never used the words 'shitpile' or 'buffoons', he might as well have, because this is really what he is saying; and the American character, m.o., way of being in the world and distorting reality, did not chg after Vietnam. As Gore Vidal once put it, "Americans never learn." They simply don't profit from their mistakes, because they think everything they do is not a mistake. Which is our greatest mistake of all.

Karma means that if you're a crap country, you wind up in a pile of crap. It's not rocket science, except to Americans.

Recently circulating on Twitter/X are remarks made by one of France's longest serving Foreign Ministers, Hubert Vedrine, to Madeleine Albright circa 1996. According to Mr. Vedrine, la Albright accused him of "betraying Lafayette" (the famous French general who helped secure the US' independence) because he opposed her on a particular subject. Vedrine's response: "Actually, we didn't intervene at all to help America. We did it only to annoy Great Britain. Besides, if we had known what you were going to become, a kind of arrogant, dominating empire, all that, I think we wouldn't have helped you!"

France and other "allies" would have been wise to distance themselves from the US. Alas, they have done the opposite and will suffer incalculable damage for many years to come.

Sahlins to me is a classic example of what I argued in WAF: America failed because it paid no attention to the thinkers, and the concepts, that cd have saved it. All it ever cared abt was economic and technological expansion, aka hustling, and by ignoring people like Sahlins, it degenerated into the empty culture we have today. That said, I maintain that the seeming explosion of non-binary gender identities is telling us something much darker:

Western culture is alienating people from their own bodies.

It’s the destination point of a culture that’s designed to tell you that your feelings are wrong, and desire for community is weakness.

  186. Mass shootings here in the Land of Shit have been quiescent lately. So what better time to spark them up than on (an albeit minor) holiday weekend that celebrates some Roman Catholic hall of famer.

And here’s even more and BETTER news on Kyle. He’s going to be talking at Kent State. We all know what happened there May 4, 1970.

Schmiden has a "cure" 4 fixing the Death by Opioid phenomenon, so sez this piece here. I bet he can also move mountains & make the blind see;)

Speaking of ODs, now they've got kids carrying around Naloxone. Amerikkkans r paying a heavy price 4 their stupidity, & not facing their situation head-on

  188. For almost 80 years the Palestinians have had to put up with this shit. This is nothing short of heart-breaking.

Give us a bit more commentary, por favor. Karma is going to overtake Israel, but in the interim it may murder another 30,000 Palestinians. What an awful country.

Remember George Carlin, on where our leaders come from (not Mars). A nasty people produced a vicious leader, Netanyahu. In the US, a collection of buffoons gave us Schmiden and Schmamala.

  190. Last episode of Netflix's Turning Point: The Bomb & the Cold War says US set precedence for Putin by invading Iraq: not a threat to us, not involved in 9/11, didn't have WMDs, cost $728b, 4,492 killed, 32,292 wounded, ~200,000 Iraqies killed. https://youtu.be/qHuuLo-CSRo?si=vyMc8w2apPXoYhnD

Touche, and thanks for the ref. Also $6b got lost, was never accounted for, and probably wound up in private pockets. The economic payoff of war to US arms merchants is an obvious motive of American wars, but as I've also argued in a # of my works (see esp. QOV), psychologically speaking, America needs to have an enemy; it thrives on opposition, because it is hollow at the center, and war distracts it from self-examination.
