For Whom the Bell Tolls
Well, we've had a good time discussing Tulsi, Tulsism, chicken sandwich suppositories, and the staunch refusal of Dems/progs/wokes to stop beating off. As we slowly crawl toward Nov. 8, the inevitability of the 'left' (there's a joke for ya) getting creamed at the polls looms clearly on the horizon. At the conclusion of the last thread I posted an article suggesting how the US could, or 'should', do something intelligent (which is to say, counter-intuitive) during its twilight years. But this is where savvy historians know better, because the historical record, as Arnold Toynbee clearly demonstrated, is that this is not what dying empires do. What they do is keep on with what brought them to the point of self-destruction in the first place, because that's really all they know. And as 'exceptional' as America likes to regard itself, it will not escape its fate. It will even accelerate its self-destructive trajectory. Declinists just shrug.

Tim,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the essay on woke feminism. How horrible that countless young women are being taught that all men are conspiring to rape and oppress them. This conspiracy theory is the Qanon of the radical left.
vsoguy,
I apologize for using such harsh language. Please rest assured, I don't like wokes any more than you do. However, as Dr. B likes to point out, bubbas are stockpiling weapons while wokes do nothing but beat off. The bubbas will easily win the boogaloo, which is why I spend more time talking about their brand of fascism rather than woke fascism.
Doctor,
ReplyDeleteAt least in this new video age we can watch the collapse in real time. We can watch USAins killing one another as this violent pathetic wasteland disintegrates into oblivion. Perhaps this typical ugly bald-headed bearded “macho” scumbag should be shown as a model for it. Maybe his nickname should be “Donner”. Because after all, this is one way that USAins are eating each other metaphorically.
And perhaps the new slogan here should be: “Don’t think. Shoot.”

ReplyDeleteQ: Why did the American cross the road?
A: His car was out of gas.
Q: How many Americans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: Only one because Americans can do everything on their own. They don't need your charity! They aren't children.
Q: What does an uninsured American do when he is diagnosed with cancer?
A: He dies.
You know you're an American if...

Have your thoughts on elite/intellectual vs privilege changed at all? NPR (a favorite in cities) seems to focus nearly exclusively on talking about race & privilege.
ReplyDeleteThe media is full of these poorly thought out discussions, and I worry that there will be an overreaction in the coming generations, where any kind of achievement will be compared against people who are struggling, so that everyone is constantly having to think about their privilege. I have listened for 30 years to bubbas saying "one more encroachment by the left or the government, and that's it!" The left and the government joyfully crosses the line and the bubbas do nothing but assure each other, ok, we'll let it go, but next time....

When did Americans start reading such bad books? Were bestseller lists this bad in 1960? 1970? The popular books are either celebrity, self-help, propaganda, or discredited research (e.g. Sapiens, Dawn of Everything). It seems most best sellers are for ignorant people without a critical mind.
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to think if a book has been on a bestseller list in the past 15 years, you should avoid it. I realized this when I picked up Graeber's latest steaming pile, which is currently a bestseller.

Miles, I'm gonna go out on a limb here & defend Whoopi's comment. She said that the Holocaust was not about race -- which would seem to be an accurate statement. The Holocaust was about Hitler's hatred of the Jewish people & his attempt to kill as many of them as he could. The thing is: Jews are evidently not a race. The Jews whom Hitler killed were largely white because the Holocaust took place in Europe, but in fact Jewish people can be found among those of African, Asian, & Semitic descent. Whoopi herself is a Jewish woman of African descent & I have no doubt that had she lived in Germany during the 3rd Reich & the Nazis were aware that she was Jewish, they would have sent her to the concentration camp right along with the European Jews. Hitler didn't hate Asians, Africans, or any other race (though he regarded Europeans as superior), he specifically hated Jews of all races & nationalities. To put this succinctly & syllogistically I would say:
ReplyDeleteThe Holocaust was about killing Jews
Jews are not a race
Therefore, the Holocaust could not have been about race.
If the first two premises are true, then so is the conclusion. For the Holocaust to be about race, you'd have to assert either 1) that Jews are a subgroup within a certain race (the white race in this case); which would mean that all non-white Jews are impostors; or 2) you would have to deny that the Holocaust (as most people would understand it) ever occurred. Since neither of these alternatives could be true, then I think Whoopi's statement stands: The Holocaust could not have been about race. To me this seems like an obvious, noncontroversial statement. How anyone could interpret Whoopi's remark as racist or antisemitic boggles my mind. I don't think she has anything to apologize for.

ReplyDeleteYr defining race a bit too narrowly, I fear. Of course the Jews are a race, but not in some narrow, academic- anthropological sense. And Hitler certainly saw them as such, no question abt that (think of how much energy the Nazis expended on nose-measuring, cranium-measuring, establishing categories of 'Mischling' and such, etc. etc.; it was a fucking race industry). Whoopi not merely misspoke; she was absurd, altho the very necessary apology did help somewhat. I think you might need to unboggle yr mind a bit. Yr word play only serves to obscure/muddle a very obvious truth.

I have found the best commentaries that cut through the BS and rhetoric over Ukraine to be recent posts by Patrick Armstrong and Scott Ritter. Armstrong, a former Russia specialist now retired from the Canadian Department of National Defense, sees Russia as deciding to draw a line on NATO expansion in Ukraine and encirclement by US missiles close to Russian borders, neither the US nor Europeans willing to muster enough military force to counter potential Russian military numbers, and the US only able to threaten economic sanctions like freezing Russian access to the SWIFT banking system of clearing international accounts that would hurt European economies’ trade with Russia much more than the US. Ritter sees Russia holding all the cards and exploiting NATO military inferiority, lack of consensus among US European allies on sanctions, and threatening shutoff of energy supplies to Europe if sanctions happen. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki blasted Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley for his audacity in suggesting the US drop the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO, asserting Hawley was “not aligned with long standing bipartisan American values.” The whole Ukraine spectacle looks like a doubling down on imperial overstretch. As Biden promised, Nothing Will Change. Here are the links:

Your position is completely absurd, as MB succinctly pointed out, and your statement that Hitler "didn't hate Africans" has no leg to stand on whatsoever. For starters, you should know that the Nazis widely condemned the influence of what they called "Negro culture" on German art and music, calling it "degenerate" and "racially alien" and such terms. The Nazis may not have targeted people of African descent for systematic destruction like the Jews, but they considered blacks to be an inferior race. The Notorious Nuremberg racial laws even designated black people as a minority w/alien blood:

Thanks for stating the obvious, and I'm hoping Sybok can take it in. Meanwhile, let me add a few more comments regarding the whole Whoopi flap. If Whoopi was using 'race' in the vernacular sense, and not in some strict anthropological sense, then she had no business saying that the Jews were not a race, or that the Holocaust was not abt race. What cd be more stupid, or repugnant? Regardless of IQ, Americans are not very bright, and this is a perfect example of it. "White on white" my ass. She's no anti-Semite, and I'm sure she wasn't trying to insult anyone; but she is an ignoramus (as are most Americans), and did a lot of mischief as a result. Instead of taking her off the air, the network shd have required her to wear a sign around her neck (maybe for a month or two):
I AM A COLOSSAL IGNORAMUS (AND SO ARE YOU)
Technically, the British, and the Jews, are "ethnic groups." Can you imagine Churchill declaring, "We are a hardy ethnic group"? Of course not. And to say, in a vernacular context, that the Jews are not a race, or that the Holocaust was not about race, is not merely stupid; it's also destructive. Again, this was hardly her intention, but it certainly feeds the flames of American anti-Semites, of which there are millions. (They used to show up on this blog in droves, dripping with venom.) I can't help thinking of the guy storming the Capitol on 6 Jan 2021 in a T-shirt that said "Camp Auschwitz," and how many Americans must have found that amusing.
I had family that died in the Holocaust, murdered because they were part of the Jewish race. I expect a personal apology from Whoopi. I'm sitting by my fone, waiting.

Miles, read my post again. I acknowledge that Hitler was racist & considered Europeans superior (and thus Blacks inferior). Maybe I shouldn't have said he didn't hate them. Maybe he did. I guess we'll never know.
MB, I guess if the Nazi's considered Jews a race then that designation is relevant to discussions of the Holocacaust even if it was a misapplication of the word.
I've spent much of the past 24 hours reading articles by both Jews & those who hate them in an attempt to understand in what sense Jews could be a race. What I've learned is that while Jews, anti-semites, & philo-semites largely agree that they are a race, none of them can provide a coherent explanation of how a race could be composed soley of individuals of other races. I tried to understand where they were coming from -- even tried to venn diagram it -- but I just don't get it & probably never will. In any case, I don't think the subject is worth debating anymore & am ready to move on.

As Dr. B says, America has become a bad joke. Its ideologies and public discourse have become psychotic. Whether it's bubbas claiming vaccines implant people with computer chips, or wokes claiming there are three hundred genders and six hundred sexualities, the whole nation is batshit crazy. And it's going to get much worse over the next few decades, though I can scarcely imagine how.
I hope America's descent into madness helps other countries realize how toxic American values are. I hope other countries look at America's plight and cultivate compassion instead of cruelty, cooperation instead of competition, and humility instead of narcissism. Maybe this won't happen in our lifetimes, but there's every reason to hope it will happen eventually. All great art, music and literature speak volumes about the human spirit, and show what humanity is capable of.

Found this article by Michael Hudson which perfectly explains the dilemma the US faces on the international stage right now. The new Cold War against Russia and China has the objective of keeping US allies under its thumb: "The Iron Curtain of the 1940s and ‘50s was ostensibly designed to isolate Russia from Western Europe – to keep out Communist ideology and military penetration. Today’s sanctions regime is aimed inward, to prevent America’s NATO and other Western allies from opening up more trade and investment with Russia and China." https://thesaker.is/americas-real-adversaries-are-its-european-and-other-allies-the-u-s-aim-is-to-keep-them-from-trading-with-china-and-russia/

I believe there's a new mythology being created right now in response to covid lockdowns, the rise of the internet, military-corporate control, mass stupidity, and globalized isolation. I believe these videos & blogs to be a kind of code language that gets past the censors, and is a commentary on the present. The more physical/literal minded of the population dismisses all of this as fiction & conspiracy, but I think these alternative histories tap into something deeper in human consciousness. I look at this like how a kabbalist knows scripture is purely mystical code language, that none of it is literally/physically true.

Dear Dr. Berman & Wafers: The weather forecast for Merka certainly isn't looking good. A friend wrote from allegedly liberal Missoula, Montana, this a.m. to say the city council there unanimously approved an expenditure for training of local police by Killology. Even council members who questioned the expenditure went along. The mayor, who started out strong 4 terms ago, has become an apologist for the police (and real estate developers).

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-watch/wp/2017/02/14/a-day-with-killology-police-trainer-dave-grossman/?utm_term=.617cafc5d543
From the article: "The term 'killology' was coined by Dave Grossman, a former Army Ranger and U.S. Military Academy psychology professor who has zigzagged the country to bring his police seminars to thousands of officers. His 1995 book, 'On Killing,' explores the psychological reaction to extreme violence. It asserts that people need, in a sense, to be trained to have a healthy emotional reaction to killing. It is on the Marine Corps Commandant’s Professional Reading List and has been part of the curriculum at the FBI and the nation’s service academies."

Arthur - The Rogan controversy can be summed up like this:
ReplyDeleteHe has honest, long form conversations with almost anyone. He doesn’t claim to be an intellectual, he’s just a genuinely curious person. He’s a comedian with no agenda other than talking to people he finds interesting in one aspect or another. He never planned on blowing up into one of the most downloaded and listened to podcasts in the world, it was organic.
Because of his honesty and good faith, more people place trust in his podcasts than they would listening to CNN, FOX, MS13DNC, eh, I mean MSNBC, etc. especially after his conversation with Dr Sanjay Gupta, where he confronted Gupta with the fact that CNN lied about his use of IVM. And because he has platformed guests that counter mainstream narratives (Glenn Greenwald, Snowden, Dr Malone, etc), the powerful want him neutered. He’s too influential in terms of public persuasion.
Last but not least, dumb Americans being told Rogan is hunting triceratops! https://youtu.be/KFuFqA4CG78
Arthur-
ReplyDeleteDo you have that link where Rogan confronted Gupta, by any chance? (And be sure to identify stuff like IVM, in future.) Also, Malone worked on mRNA. Someone just sent me this:
"It is imperative that worldwide administration of the mRNA vaccinations be stopped immediately until further studies are conducted to determine the extent of the potential pathological consequences outlined in this paper. It is not possible for these vaccinations to be considered part of a public health campaign without a detailed analysis of the human impact of the potential collateral damage. It is also imperative that VAERS and other monitoring system be optimized to detect signals related to the health consequences of mRNA vaccination we have outlined. We believe the upgraded VAERS monitoring system described in the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Inc. study, but unfortunately not supported by the CDC, would be a valuable start in this regard. In the end, we are not exaggerating to say that billions of lives are at stake. We call on the public health institutions to demonstrate, with evidence, why the issues discussed in this paper are not relevant to public health, or to acknowledge that they are and to act accordingly. Until our public health institutions do what is right in this regard, we encourage all individuals to make their own health care decisions with this information as a contributing factor in those decisions."

Also, Dr. Malone's views are very controversial, so that's one of the many reasons why Rogan came under so much heat. But instead of countering Malone's claims, the mainstream just tries to silence the discussion, hence Rogan's popularity. Streisand effect.

Good evening Dr. Berman and Wafers:
ReplyDeleteIf one goes to YouTube and types in Joe Rogan Gupta Interview a number of clips pop-up. I found this one most to the point concerning their conversation.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkTXEexNB2E
Also, I can't say for sure but the quote you posted above sounds more like something Dr. Malone would say not Gupta. As you know, the Rogan/Malone interview, in which Rogan never challenged anything the good doc said, is what really started the dust up. If he had argued with Malone to the same extent he argued with Gupta my guess is that would've been the end of it. Except, of course, for the woke crowd which is never satisfied.
Stay safe all.
MH,
ReplyDeleteThat's a real eye-opening article, especially the part about de-industrialization, and how re-industrialization won't work. Plenty of us US workers know what it's like to do "customer service", but how many now know what it's like to make durable goods?
An almost complete description of Americans today: "That’s why we prefer the term market fundamentalist. It captures the narrow dogmatism of modern neoliberal political economy. It also captures the magical thinking—the nearly religious faith in markets to solve all problems and meet all needs."
Reckoning with that "magical thinking" is the most frustrating thing about participating in US democracy.

ReplyDeleteNo, I wasn't saying that quote was from Gupta. It's from some study of mRNA, wh/source I cite. I didn't think the author was Malone, but then I don't know v. much. Hello Dr. B, One of the 4-5 contributors to the article about the Covid 19 vaxxes you posted a quote from is an MIT scientist by the name of Stephanie Seneff. In spite of her impressive credentials, she sounds, to say the least, a bit “sketchy” to me. I am basing that claim on this Wiki article about her as it’s the only thing i’ve read about Dr. Seneff so far in its entirety. A google search of her name produced plenty of other articles about her and based on what little I read of them…the general consensus in the scientific community SEEMS to be that she’s been regarded as a quack for at least 10 years now. I know nothing about the other individuals who contributed to this article. Now I myself am not making ANY claims about her one way or another or at least none that I hold with an acceptable degree of confidence. For one thing…my expertise in the relevant fields is quite limited and therefore I don’t know all that I should know in order to call her a quack OR a brave and independent “voice crying out in the wilderness”. Considering what’s at stake here, I just thought this is something you and several others here should know. Basically I don’t even trust my own mother these days, so hopefully others will understand my position on this matter and refrain from “shooting the messenger”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephanie_Seneff

Ajay, I read Grossman's On Killing. Some of what he says is true about how combat is corrosive and toxic, but the parts where he glorifies the US military even when they kill people in other nations is insane. He doesn't tip toe, he uses no euphemisms; he's boastful about being from the biggest terrorist organization in recent history (US military) and heaps outright praise on these genocidal scumbags. I got shivers reading the book of a deranged psychotic murderer. I bought it mistakenly thinking it was going to be like the spectacular Meditations on Violence by Rory Miller, a book everyone should read more than once.

ReplyDeleteCheck out a few of the essays in QOV in wh/I discuss the American need for an Evil Enemy--a psychology that goes back centuries, and is the core of our foreign policy. This type of Manichaean 'thinking', wh/includes the Cold War in all of its replications (like, today), is all that Americans know how to do. In that earlier Cold War, John Foster Dulles called it 'brinksmanship', and he was one sick dude (check out "The Brothers," by Stephen Kinzer). In this sense, Biden is a marionette on strings, being played by unseen forces, so to speak. As a result, anything could happen at this pt. Let's hope Biden is scared enuf to back off at the last moment.
There is a true bottom line here, which 99.99% of the American public can't see: the US is actually insane.
mb
ps: Fascinating to see how the NYT and other MSM whip up fear/anger at Russia on a daily basis. A clueless public will just go along w/it, because Americans are not very bright, live in an emotional B&W world, and don't really understand the concept of dialogue. So not much interest around in exploring the Russian side of the story (what a surprise). We learn nothing. Decades go by, and we do the same old shit. Sounds rather similar to the hysteria of the Cold War and the McCarthy era.
ReplyDeleteTo MB:
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned the American need for an enemy and their Manichaean thinking and it seems that their mentality is reflected not only in their foreign policy but also in the American population itself. It is no wonder why that in American schools, the workplace and even in places of worship, there is always a culture of cliques, exclusive groups, bullying, "the cool crowd", the labeling of others as "wierdos" or "strange", meaningless gossip and of course violence. I used to wonder why it was like that but when you mentioned about American Manichaean thinking, that was when I found the answer.
About the tension with Russia that is going on now, do you think that it could be that the
US is making a big show because it wants to save face after the world watched it get defeated in Afghanistan?

ReplyDeleteThose 'other Americans', of course, wd include David Pakman, imo. As for East vs. West: Last yr Bill Maher did a 7-min. clip called something like "Americans Are Dumb." What he did was compare Americans to the Chinese, showing that while the former cdn't build an indoor den, the Chinese were busy constructing skyscrapers. One example among many, in those 7 minutes. In every area of life, Maher showed that the Chinese were efficient and hardworking and savvy, and that Americans were dickheads. I esp. liked this Maher episode because he didn't talk like Chomsky or Hedges abt the evil corporations or the elite, but put the blame squarely where it belonged: on Americans and the American character. Of course, I myself follow in the great tradition of H.L. Mencken, George Carlin, and Gore Vidal, in recognizing this; perhaps Bill can now be added to this very rare list, of individuals who are truly insightful as opposed to pseudo-insightful (all modesty aside).
Some yrs ago I read that 92% of the Vietnamese people wrote poetry. The figure is high for Russians as well, for whom folks such as Anna Akhmatova are heroes (they can recite sections of her work by heart). I wonder if even 33% of Americans know what poetry *is*, let alone read it, let alone write it. If you stop any random American on the street and ask them who Robt Frost was, chances are they will stare at you with a loopy look on their faces. In a nation of 332 million people, I doubt that 100 of them wd be able to name the poem of which this is the first line: "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood..."
The literature on anti-intellectualism in American life, starting with Richd Hofstadter ca. 1959, is quite dense. Americans hate intellectuals and sneer at poetry and the life of the mind. Of course, you might say, "Well, that's just the bubbas." The problem is that most wokes pursue the intellectual life only to show off (another form of virtue signaling). They quote Rilke or Heine only to show that they know these writers, and are therefore superior to their neighbors (whose names they don't even know). But do they get what Rilke is actually saying? Do they undertake to change their lives, as he urges us to do? Not bloody likely. So what we've got is a nation of 50% boors, who are accurately represented by Trumpaloni, and 50% snobs, who think Schmiden is some sort of radical break w/our neoliberal, and very militant/belligerent past. No amount of slapping, or of urine, cd wake such people up.
Anyway, a lot more cd be said (abt India, for example, or perhaps Cambodia), but here's the crucial pt: many non-American societies have depth; they think deeply abt things. Americans are shallow as a dime; frivolous people, buffoons, who beat off and think it's effective action. As the US sinks into 3rd-rate status, and China emerges as the new hegemon, shd we really be surprised?

Hi Professor, fascinating essay by Claus Leggewie in the LA Review of Books about the 1937 book 'The Power of the Charlatan' by Grete De Francesco. The book was inspired by Thomas Mann's 'Mario and the Magician'. H/T to nakedcapitalism.com
ReplyDeleteStart Excerpt: In her study of the charlatan figure, de Francesco carefully avoided drawing conclusions for her own time. And yet her observations on the nature and mechanisms of charlatanry are valuable not just for the era of fascism but for the early 21st century as well.
The charlatan — or fake, as we would perhaps say — is shrewd rather than intelligent, a sciolist. He does not imitate; he distorts, not least reality, by means of his falsehoods. He relies on science as mirror and antagonist, perverting all empirical evidence and theoretical sophistication, and lampooning it through his use of poorly understood terminology. Charlatans form no unified profession: you will find them in all classes and lines of work; what matters is the orientation toward their own gain. Where the pedant seriously considers every detail, the charlatan is well aware of the triviality of what he advertises; the former deceives himself, the latter others. Thus, the charlatan is nothing without a following, a group of believers mainly made up of weak and disappointed individuals whom he despises and looks down upon — they want to be deceived, after all, especially in times of crisis and turmoil.
End Excerpt
Extremely relevant to contemporary USA.
I've tried to find an English translation but so far no luck.

expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements).
2. Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love.
3. Believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or
should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions).
4. Requires excessive admiration.
5. Has a sense of entitlement (i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable
treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations).
6. Is interpersonally exploitative (i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his/her own ends).
7. Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others.
8. Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her.

ReplyDeleteI have been reading "See You in the Piazza," by Frances Mayes. She and her husband have been traveling around Italy, and it's so striking to read abt the Italian way of life, so different from that of the US. Instead of people immersed in competition, hustling, alienation, hostility, and vulgarity, we find the following (this in the part of Italy called Le Marche, east of Tuscany, near a town called Sant'Angelo in Vado):
"At the recommendation of the B&B owner, we try Ristorante Pizzeria Barbara....When we arrive, the very large, well-lit restaurant is totally packed with local families and groups....Everyone visits from table to table, stopping to greet a dozen people as they enter and exit. The waitstaff knows everyone....Here's a sense of community. Here's where you came after your first communion, for your first date, with your kids, with your grandchildren. One of those important neighborhood classics we all long for: Our place. Where we have our special corner. Where the young girl waiting tables is your dentist's daughter. As flies on the wall, we participate in this weekend routine that everyone here knows so well. And the pizza is terrific."

ReplyDeleteThat's a great explanation for why America is depleted. When you said the West is depleted, did you mean America, or did you mean the whole West - America, Europe, Australia, Canada and New Zealand? If you meant that all these countries are depleted, is it because they became too Americanized, or is it for some other reason? Maybe Western imperialism hollowed the West out spiritually, eventually leading to the economic and political collapse we're seeing today?

The problem with America is not lack of resources, but lack of intelligence which results in destructive policies and mismanaged resources. It’s really incredible to be able to observe this up close, even though I would rather be far away. This country is literally imploding under the weight of its own stupidity. I never imagined this was possible! This was definitely not what I expected. It is far worse because ignorance can be cured through education but stupidity is terminal. The first warning sign for me was when Trump became president, but it was not until later in his presidency that I realized how much I had underestimated the seriousness of the situation. This mistake will not be repeated. I am working on my escape plan, lol, and this bog is a great source of motivation.

ReplyDeleteI never did get your original post, it seems. As for the follow-up: I cdn't run it because you provided no evidence for your assertions. Evidence is big on this blog: links, reliable references, etc. Pure opinion: not so impressive. However, your argument is interesting. Perhaps you could re-send it, providing backup this time. Thank you.

The link to their weekly report of Arab / Muslim media is here:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.memri.org/reports/memri-weekly-february-4-11-2022
The reports change constantly, so what I am writing here is true for now, but it is likely to be similar. When you look at it you see quite a lot of reports about disgust of America and Israel, but also quite a few of criticism of their own leaders. For example, as I write, these include no. 9765, 9762, 9761, 9753, etc.
In any case, you can look at the web site and search for, say, "reform," "liberal," and find both articles about reformers being imprisoned, and about them being successful. MEMRI also supports a reform project, found here:
https://www.memri.org/reports/2021-editors-picks-top-memri-tv-clips-reform-project
Which (it should be clear) is NOT them giving money or help to reformers in the Arab-Muslim world, but them highlighting them to the west when they appear on the Arab or Iranian media. Again, the point is not that all these reformers are necessarily correct or even fair, but that such criticism is aired at all by the Arabs and Muslims themselves.
The book "Worlds in Collision" came out in 1950, and was universally panned & hated by the status quo scientists for being "pseudoscience." Think what you want of the book, but the fact remains that millions of supposedly smart Americans were buying pseudoscience in 1950 that was denounced by the entire establishment.

MB - why do you think there was ever a period when Americans were intelligent? You go back to the 19th century, and the dominant view in America was ahistorical & magical from the viewpoint of the status quo. The facts show that Americans have always been idiots, that today isn't worse than in the past. Your view of a previous good era in America in false.

Yes, GSWH. This is so very true. What a laughable pathetic joke this country is. I just wonder if this headline would have been even bigger had Kim Kardashian been in a few of these Madison Avenue specialties.

In the early 19C, Shakespeare's plays were regularly put on in Southern states. And I mean lots of them. Check out my discussion in WAF ch. 4 of the deep intellectual heritage of the South; wh/was even deeper and more active in the North. You refer to 'the facts', but produce none for us to consider. Today is much worse than the past. You are the one who is false, and a bit of a turkey. Getting an education, and a large amount of therapy, wd not be a bad direction for you to go in.

ReplyDeleteContinuing on w/Frances Mayes: she moved on to Lazio, a region of Italy not far from Rome:
"On the lawn below, a first communion party moves into its fourth hour. A long lunch under umbrellas, table laid for maybe sixty, is over. Half have gone but the rest linger in the mellow afternoon. A few men still sit at the table, smoking and talking....Women lounge in the lawn chairs with children playing games all around them....Someone plays a sweet guitar. How many such celebrations have I attended...lulled and carried by the timelessness of what Italians do best, celebrating life.
"I'm sinking into the pillows, dreamy, thinking strangely that if I were to die now, this would not be a bad ending, listening to an Italian party on a spring afternoon."
How many American buffoons wd be able to identify w/these sorts of events, and w/this sort of reaction to them?
mb
Still in Lazio, Frances continues on to the town of Sperlonga. I'm trying to guess how many Americans understand that a life of hustling, trying to be special, competing, acquiring money and possessions, is in fact death. A few thousand, at most?
ReplyDelete"The extravagant beauty of Sperlonga will never leave me. I first saw the twisted whitewashed village above the sea twenty years ago and at many moments those blue views through arches, white laundry flapping in the wind, waterfalls of magenta bougainvillea have risen unbidden in my mind. Such a place gets at the heart of the Mediterranean fantasy: *Here is my place in the sun.* Stone stairs curving up to a simple room, a table on a balcony, a breeze--breath of gods--a pot of rosemary and basil. A few books, and solitude all the way to the horizon....
"That scent of focaccia always has been wafting out the *forno* door....Maybe we haven't changed, either. No longer the innocents abroad but still bedazzled by the charge and fierce life of the old world....
"In the *centro storico,* there is nothing in particular to accomplish, other than enjoy grilled octopus on a high terrace, wander, sit in the sun, and read a guidebook. It's a place to climb up streets narrow as veins and to look how people have planted their stoops with cacti or geraniums, to notice how someone has glued seashells up the drainpipe, and how many people choose to paint their doors blue."
How, O Lord, cd u create Americans, who are the very antithesis of this way of life?

ReplyDeleteAfter 2 wks of NYT headlines on "Russian Invasion of Ukraine Imminent," it now seems that Russia is de-escalating its forces. All that phony hysteria for nothing, because Cold War is the only foreign policy recipe the US knows. If these recent reports are accurate, the whole thing was an exercise in Advanced Beating Off (ABO); theater, in short. At the same time that the NYT began beating (off) the war drums, in an attempt to get Americans all worked up, I offered the following analysis of the whole pseudo-drama: Ukraine/Schmukraine. Looks like this analysis was correct.

“The tale of how the story went viral, how it was covered by other media, and how readers here and elsewhere reacted is one worth telling, I think. It says much about the state of the news media and public discourse today.”
“But is the song truly tainted by racism? Does it have no place in an elementary school curriculum? Or should it, as professor Kyna Hamill says, ‘be sung and enjoyed, and perhaps discussed.’ There might be no right answers, but to me, the questions are worth asking.”
