Trauma Nation

Waferinos-

Have recently been listening to talks by Gabor Mate, an honorary Wafer for sure. He's got an hour-long film coming out soon, "The Wisdom of Trauma." He believes that trauma means a disconnection from the self, and healing = reconnecting to your true self. We get disconnected, he says, because it's too painful to be ourself. I thought, this is the story of America.

In one of his short YouTube cuts, he comments on the 2016 Hillary-Trump debates as two traumatized people fighting for the right to govern a traumatized America. These are the people our society rewards with power. And his data as to how sick Americans are, are impressive: rates of addiction, suicide, anxiety, depression, and so on. You folks may remember my list of "ized": weaponized, moronized, digitalized, buffoonized, and so on. Mate would argue that these are the effects of being traumatized.

Of course, Mate's treatment, like all therapy, is individual; politically speaking, the country will remain fucked, with people like Hillary or Trumpalumpi in charge. "Mass therapy," complete with very sick gurus, is a cure worse than the disease. But Mate does offer some help to those who want to get beyond being run by traumatized, unconscious programs.

In this short talk Mate discusses the need for attachment to be
seen in addiction to so many everyday items, like alcohol, drugs,
and certainly shopping for what is not needed but merely gives
temporary pleasure. For lost authenticity, one can try to define
oneself as being normal by being just like others if finding one's
true nature is not possible. Certainly in these two the dangers of
illusions and self-deception are great, for both the person and
    all of society.

I stumbled upon an interesting hypothesis, "Social Surrogacy", which says that lonely people seek out fictitious TV relationships and live vicariously through tv characters to get a sense of a social life and friendship. Reminded me of the same thing that Dr. Berman said in one of his books, which if I am remembering correctly about how Americans adore TV shows because they're a substitute for a real social life and the only way they can experience friendship, what with Americans being some of the loneliest people. That part stuck with me for a long time, it's so true and sad and captivating to me.

  5. Cherith, Art-

You hafta wonder why Seinfeld ran for 9 yrs, Friends for 10, and Big Bang Theory for 12. These shows were wildly popular, as was Schitt's Creek. I did write at some pt, I forget where, that inasmuch as community was basic to a healthy life, and inasmuch as Americans didn't have any, these shows acted as substitutes. There have been a # of studies showing how lonely Americans are. In one of his short profiles, Gabor Mate notes that in the richest country in the world, Americans are the most miserable. American culture operates in such a way as to make people hate themselves. What they then do as a result is try to find love thru various addictions, wh/includes political power. Really look at what a sad person Trumpi is, endlessly trying to get love and attention. Or all of those awful Karen clips we've seen: same dynamic. It boils down to: "WAAAAH!"

I don't watch much American TV but when I do I'm struck by the amount of time devoted to commercials. No less than 15-20 minutes of an hour long primetime show. A 1 hour basketball or football game becomes a 2-3 hour program.

American lives are filled daily with psychologically proven methods of convincing them to buy things they really don't want or need.

For example, I was amazed to learn that there is something called a used car vending machine. Go online, pick a car, sign the necessary papers, and the car of your choice will magically be delivered to your door the next day. How idiotic does one have to be buy a car without test driving it, much less seeing it in person?

And I've concluded that, short of living alone in the woods and never coming in contact with American civilization, it is impossible to avoid being exposed to advertisements, no matter where one is. Last week I stopped at a gas station to fill up. Within 3 seconds of approaching a pump I was assaulted by a scream -"Hey you" - from the ubiquitous screen on the front of the pump. Having gotten my attention, the voice urged me partake of the delicious iced drinks in the station's store.

I want to thank Miles and all of you who enabled me to read the essay in the Atlantic about Trumpi's upcoming coup. This one article is the most convincing piece I've read about the American exp't being finished in Nov. 2024. As you know, I've predicted 2030 as our death knell, but it looks like it might come earlier. What is also clear is something Bill Maher and I have talked about in recent times: the fact that while the rt-wing has been carefully gerrymandering, and accumulating arms, the Dems and progs and wokes have been beating off. Schmiden is among the beaters: the article pts out that he makes a speech acknowledging the threat, and adds: "We must act." But he doesn't say what the action shd consist of, and he himself does nothing to stop the gathering Trump coup. All the signs indicate that the country really is finished; that it is on its last legs.

Glad you were able to access the Gellman article. Indeed, he makes some solid points about how six ways to Sunday America is fucked in the head. Also, many thanks for yr recommendation of the film, "Unhinged." I screened it last night, and it really delivers. As things really heat up in American society, it seems that more and more people are simply going off the deep end. If this film doesn't settle down American road rage, I don't know what will! In addition, there are a lot of truths in this film about America: morons just staring into their fones, rudeness, self-centeredness, irresponsibility, and other things ,etc. Again, many thanks for the rec.

You know how I'm always talking abt how the microcosm mirrors the macrocosm, and vice versa. "Unhinged" is a gd view of the micro, but writ large we can also see that the entire nation is unhinged, as a social, economic, cultural, and political entity. Individuals are going batshit crazy, while the nation at large is drifting toward complete dysfunction. Between now and the likely reelection of Trumpi, what might occur? Impotence in foreign policy, in the face of Russia and China; and at home, the muscle-flexing of the bubbas, for a possible Boogaloo. Meanwhile, your next-door neighbor is a douche baguette, and an icon of the American population.

I would argue that for americans what Laborit calls the inhibition of action (Peter a Levine describes the same process as traumatic if one Can not escape it) is, among other factors, at the root of all their destructive behavior. In fact, he said that when an organism can neither escape or fight back it gets into a state of freeze which if prolonged would cause a plethora of physiological and psychological pathologies and even social pathologies, and Laborit used it to explain and critisize modern politics and the armement race. I'd say, based on first hand experience, that americans are chronically stuck in a freeze state (maybe most of the world have this problem and america is juste the most stuck).

The Board of Trustees of Evergreen College here in Olympia announced the hiring of two leaders for the college in the form of interim President John Carmichael (formerly vice president for finance and operations, meet the new boss same as the old) and Executive Vice President Dexter Gordon (not the sax player, but former Evergreen student and director of African American studies at University of Puget Sound). Both say that growing enrollment is job number 1 as the college has sunk to an all-time low of 2,000 students. What they propose apparently are such audacious measures as more mainstream and short-term credentialing courses, a new School of Professional Studies with such courses as audio production, business admin and entrepreneurship, computer science, and anthro-zoology (the interrelationship of humans and animals). Gordon said, “We are stabilizing ourselves and readying ourselves for the next 50 years.” Hmmm, that’d be out to 2070, should be a humdinger of a Buffoonistan.

  62. In my opinion, when it comes to bittersweet love ballads, the Irish are hard to beat. (Sometime in the past someone on this blog commented that oppressed people have the best music.) The music and Gaelic for “Eileen Aroon” are from the 17th century poet Carol O’Daly. The English translation is from Gerald Griffin (1830s).

    The last verse:

“Castles are sacked in war, chieftains are scattered far
Truth is a fix-ed star, Eileen Aroon.”

This made me lament for the USAians who are so focused on their screens and gun sights that they can not see the “fix-ed star.”

    Doctor,
You often say it doesn’t take much to get shot and killed by cops nowadays. Throw in a mentally unstable man into the mix. Yes. The guy had a knife. However, at no time did it look as if he caused a threat, even while taking a couple of steps toward them. Check out the body cam video. One cop tases him; the other cop for good measure blows him away. Oh but they’ll claim self defense in our modern-day police state here in our U.S.A.! And they’ll invoke their “qualified immunity” clause.

We've discussed Americans killing each other with guns, but this article chronicles, among other things, several cases of Americans killing multiple family members with guns. Some of these killings involved the shooting of infants or toddlers. In one case, a man who had a clean record and repeatedly posted about love and compassion on social media snapped and killed his wife and four young children. He was in the midst of divorce, but that doesn't explain why he did what he did.

Fellini was very prescient in his 1960 film "La dolce vita." There is a character there, an intellectual named Steiner, who tells Marcello (central character) that he is seeking a more spiritual life. Shortly after that he kills his 2 kids and himself. The implication, in the context of the film, is that despite his intellectual activity (studying Sanskrit) and his musical activity (playing Bach on the organ), he was emotionally empty. His life was a facade. He had never dealt with his inner life. How many Americans fall into a similar category?

The mission of the college, he shared, is to train students in skills needed by corporations and manufacturers in the area so that the county can brag about being "business-friendly". In other words, companies have outsourced the training of their workers to the public. This, he said, is a common practice nationwide. Taxpayers pay for people to attend college so that they can become employees of large corporations. Training that used to be done by the employer but is now provided free of charge (to them) by your friendly, local community college. What a deal!

There’s deep consternation & sadness today over the passing yesterday of “bell hooks” (born Gloria Jean Watkins, she did use the diminutive orthographic to spell her name as an author & educator). I’ve heard of her before, but never read her books. Here’s a Waferian observation: “It is apparent that one of the primary reasons we have not experienced a revolution of values is that a culture of domination necessarily promotes addiction to lying and denial.” A google search corroborates that indeed this quote is from her book: “Teaching to Transgress.” It seems that someone like a Chris Hedges has not had his reckoning, just yet, with this keen observation by Ms. hooks. The one book I read (I've forgotten the title) was so simplistic and bad, that I ended up tossing it in the trash. I remember it as dripping w/condescension and being very pretentious. hooks styled herself as someone who was very "inclusive" (buzzword of the 1990s), but spent most of her time antagonizing anyone who did not agree w/her definition of feminism. In a nutshell, she was an expert at citing her opinions and experiences w/men as though they were true, unbiased facts. At one point, I recall, she said that all men are incapable of feeling real emotion. Gimme a break! No thanks...

Speaking of "Trauma Nation", this concept hit close to home for me this week. My best friend had a horrible experience last week. She is one of the sweetest people I know, so it's safe to assume that the fight she had with her boyfriend was his fault. At any rate, it wasn't even a "breakup fight". But this guy is such a supercharged douchebag that he ran off to the nearest cemetery, and texted her a picture of a noose that he threw around a tree. She knew what that meant, and called him begging him not to do it. But the next text she got was him hanging himself, with his big bug eyes popping out of his head. Apparently he just eased himself into the noose, so that he slowly strangled himself, rather than breaking his neck right away. But I found it striking that in addition to exhibiting a profound level of cruelty, lack of empathy, pathological narcissism, the "death instinct", etc.(All quintessentially American traits), the prick still was able to manage to snap a picture of himself with his stupid fucking I phone, as he was slowly suffocating to death, and then send it to my friend. Needless to say, she too is now severely traumatized. What a fucking country, no? (I'll make my next post something less personal, and with a link. But I figured this was apropos enough in light of the subject heading of this entry of Dr. Berman's.)

I was kinda shocked the Apollo Theater put his name up on their marquee, an honor reserved for cultural icons. Not that this honor for Tate was excessive or garbage. What do I know as of now? As for the hype of hip hop artists that Tate talks abt: it can be said of any minority group that its goal is to get a leg up on the American hustle. MLK realized this during the last few mos. of his life. What was the pt, he thought, of trying to get a larger slice of the pie when the entire pie was rotten? Our goal shd be to change the whole rotten structure, not to rise to the top of the shit pile. Which is what Kanye and Kim have done. Whoopee! https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20211201-family-estrangement-why-adults-are-cutting-off-their-parents

"But his decision to cut them off was partly influenced by his and his wife’s heightened awareness of social issues, including the Black Lives Matter movement and MeToo. He says other adult children in his online support group have fallen out due to value-based disagreements connected to the pandemic, from older parents refusing to get vaccinated to rows over conspiracy theories about the source of the virus."

So according to this article, people are cutting off their parents if they don't support Black Lives Matter, MeToo, and get the vaccine? If this simplistic explanation is true, that's insane.

Perhaps I am cowardly in this regard and should have stated this earlier while I am no longer a teacher I still work in education.

Dr. B, schools are on the verge of institutional collapse. The timeline is days weeks months. Daily I see that authority has been removed from teachers and increasingly administrators. Local big mouths (bubba), wokesters, and the parents who don’t really care about learning have been calling the shots for the past 20 years, I’ve witnessed it up close. As much is being made about conflict between these groups, ai can tell you from first had experience they are united in their unconscious quest to make sure no one learns anything.

As has been stated on this blog, a foal reversal or cultural revolution of sorts has happened or is happening. I am sorry that I am not able to provide external evidence.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Flab-

I appreciate yr personal testimony. I saw similar things during my last years as a university professor. As for high schools etc., of course students aren't learning anything, because their teachers were so poorly educated themselves that they have 0 to teach. At the college level, postmodernism and political correctness have made higher ed a joke.

One distinction that has been lost is what the prof is supposed to be doing. Namely, teaching students how to think, not what to think. The latter is now the norm, with professors as advocates for this or that ideology. There is very little critical thinking anywhere in the country now (one reason I'm always harping on need for evidence, on this blog).

  122. MB, does your suggested ritual include drive-through facilities to attain terminal volumes of chicken suppository insertions for the holidays?

Speaking of holiday rituals here in Cascadia, the Seattle Times reports that the Chamber of Commerce in the mountain town of Leavenworth, WA decided to take the word “Christmas” out of its annual festival of holiday lights, and on December 4th even welcomed a group called Krampus Seattle, whose members paraded down the main street in hairy horned costumes inspired by the Bavarian mythical half-demon, half-goat that punished the misbehaved at Christmas. The Krampites attracted a barrage of hostile social media activity by the conservative Family Policy Institute in Lynnwood WA and by a local owner of two Leavenworth restaurants who is a member of Knights of Columbus for “attacks on Christianity” that “are becoming the norm throughout the country.” Boogaloo for the holidays, anyone?

Endless talk of January 6th, it's implications and the investigation into that event, and no mention of what sort of consequences Trump, his cronies and the rioters should face. No calls for them to be indicted for treason and/or murder, no brainstorming of possible solutions, just hysterics and endless blather.

If I was convinced America could be saved and owned one of these outlets, I'd tell liberals to arm themselves and get some practice at shooting ranges so they'd be able to defend themselves against the bubbas. I'd also call for Trump, his cronies and the rioters to be brought up on treason and murder charges and imprisoned for life. This is what resistance looks like, but liberals don't have the stomach for it. When bubbas call liberals pussies, they couldn't be more right.

But retain the staff--janitors and other workers--and doubling their current salaries, but only on condition that they sit around smoking dope all day long. In addition, each departing student will be given a boxed set of my 5-vol. work, "Foundations of the Tulsaic Way of Life" (which comes with a workout tape). The staff will be told that if they are caught doing a lick o' work, they will be summarily dismissed. Ex-faculty members will be rehired on condition that they submit a 40-page essay entitled "Progs Are Dumber than Hogs." They will also be required to lecture to (empty) lecture halls on the topic, "The Future Belongs to Bubbas and Karens, and I'm Glad." As far as possible future goes, I think we are already there:

"On October 1, 2017, Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old man from Mesquite, Nevada, opened fire upon the crowd attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. From his 32nd-floor suites in the Mandalay Bay Hotel, he fired more than 1,000 bullets, killing 60 people[a] and wounding 411, with the ensuing panic bringing the number of injured to 867. About an hour later, Paddock was found dead in his room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His motive is officially undetermined." (Wikipedia)

However, I think scenes like the one depicted in yr link might become a reality as time goes on, possibly even a frequent one. Shd we concern ourselves w/motives? Alienation (Anomie) is at the very heart of every American discontent. When Americans aren't busy hating each other, they turn their hatred inwards, never once considering the idea that there are superstructures making them absolutely miserable.

    Brian,

I loathe Joe Manchin and his right-wing fascism. However, Biden's agenda couldn't save America even if everyone were in favor of it. As MB pointed out, America's institutions are collapsing because Americans are drowning in hatred and ignorance. To save America, you'd need to make Americans loving and wise, and no political program can do that. As such, all Manchin's doing is playing a key role in hastening America's decline. This is great, because the sooner America kicks the bucket, the sooner the rest of the rest of the world can dispense with American "values" and rebuild their own cultures.

Many thanks for the book recommendation. As Wafers we are in agreement that the United States is coming to an end, but the only question is how, I suppose. My theory is a Jim Jones-style ending for the US. Characteristically, when the majority of Americans realize that the American Dream is no longer viable - most likely on the heels of a catastrophic financial collapse - they will begin to shoot themselves and each other en masse in a kind of collective suicide. In many ways this is already occurring.

    3. The US military crushes them like roaches, sorta like what the Roman army did to the Zealots during the Jewish War (66-73 A.D.).
    4. The nation is taken over by a military dictatorship. Democracy, and America, basically come to an end.
    5. Secession, and new political entities?

Meanwhile, a notice to all Wafers:

I just finished a book on the British intelligentsia during 1900-50. It's similar to "Genio"--cameos of the greats--profiling folks like Virginia Woolf, TS Eliot, Isaiah Berlin et al. Like "Genio" it's short, and an absorbing read (some of my best writing, imo). Sad to say, my last publisher, Echo Point Books, turned it down; not a money-maker, they told me. Before I resort to self-publishing, I thought I'd ask any of you if you have any connections with American publishers. I actually think the bk cd be semi-lucrative, in that Americans tend to be interested in British lives. In any case, if you have a personal connection to a decent firm, pls let me know. Many thanks.

    3. All new students must complete in their first week the Tulsi workout series documented on tapes.
    4. The deli guest lecture series to be held in the campus cafeteria will open with Morris Berman discussing “The Rise of Tulsism in the Context of the Mittaic Tradition,” during which assorted bagels and toppings will be served.

Xmas is soon upon us. I'm hoping y'all have a great holiday. One way to do that is to close yr eyes, and meditate on the degradation and debasement of our fellow citizens, and thus, of the nation at large. Think of it as a sacrament.

    Wafers and Dr Berman,

I came across this document listing instances of US Armed Forced use abroad. It has been compiled by the Congressional Research Service:
Instances of Use of United States Armed Forces Abroad, 1798-2021
    Updated September 8, 2021
    https://sgp.fas.org/crs/natsec/R42738.pdf

The trauma is not confined to the USA but has been doled out to the rest of the world for more than 200 years.

    Hi Professor Berman and Wafers,

I look forward to watching the Gabor Mate Doc. On the subject of being alienated from the self, I have been seeing this play out in American culture a great deal lately.

For example, Billie Eilish, a 19 year old pop star, recently gave an interview about how she thinks porn damaged her development: (https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/15/entertainment/billie-eilish-porn-scli-intl/index.html. I think she is correct to say porn is a disgrace and that it damages children who are exposed to it. I am in my 20s and my generation has grown up on online porn, some of the most gruesome acts known to man presented to us as eroticism from an early age. When I was around 8 yrs old, I saw the images from Abu Ghraib, and a lot of porn looks like that, in simulated form. I know you’re thinking, “what kind of porn do you watch?” But I don’t watch it as an adult, I saw this as a young teen exploring the internet, and it has been shown clearly by scholars such as Chris Hedges and Gail Dines. Hedges specifically compared the Abu Ghraib images to porn. (https://scheerpost.com/2021/12/06/hedges-american-satyricon/)

People my age often seem to be dissociating during sex and intimacy. The truth is that eroticism is being tied very closely to objectification and dehumanization. I think this is causing men and women alike to treat themselves and others as objects for pleasure, and it is doing untold harm. These are my observations growing up in the culture of liberal professional-class America.

How a future U.S. president helped avert nuclear disaster near Canada's capital

"Leading a team of two dozen men, 28-year old Lieutenant Carter had himself lowered into the damaged reactor. That week, Carter and his team courageously exposed themselves to a thousand times the level of radiation considered safe by today’s standards."

How did this man ever become president? I mean, really? Could you imagine Ronny, Willy, Dubya, or Trumpi engaging in such heroics? Jimmy Carter is the man!

USians obviously felt very strongly abt chicken sandwiches. A man was stabbed to death after a fight over a chicken sandwich; the argument began when a man accused another of cutting the line.

These USians must be part of that Hedgian et al. revolution that includes, resisting, revolting, and rising-up...for a chicken sandwich. They certainly had their priorities straight--forget no universal health care, 'Jan 6' beating off, endless war de jour, student loans, FATCA/CBT, etc.etc., naaah, just focus on chicken sandwiches and killing each other over their fried 'goodness.'

Gunnar, yes the explosion of teen girls seeking medical gender transition is worrying and appears to be a social contagion, like cutting, anorexia and bulimia. The number of such girls is up 4000% in the UK: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/09/16/minister-orders-inquiry-4000-per-cent-rise-children-wanting/

I agree that online porn exposure at a young age may play a role, I think it's one factor among many.

Did anyone else see the recent NY mag cover story, My Penis, Myself? "I didn’t need a penis to be a man. But I needed one to be me." https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/gabriel-mac-essay.html
Adults can make their own choices of course, but the article shows how gruesome phalloplasty is, and children are being put on this medical pathway at very young ages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qM9Xndn5Gro

According to researchers, 90% of Americans earn less than what your average American earned in the 1970s, have to pay exorbitant sums for health insurance, and are drowning in debt. These mind-blowing statistics prove once and for all that America has become a third world nation.

Furthermore, researchers discovered that Trump comes from a long line of criminals that goes back to the 1800s. His grandfather was a pimp, and his father defrauded the Eisenhower Administration by stealing funds from a public housing initiative. No wonder Trump turned out the way he did.
